    Under what conditions do patients want to be informed about their risk of a complication? A vignette study.N. B. A. T. Janssen, F. J. Oort, P. Fockens, D. L. Willems, H. C. J. M. de Haes & E. M. A. Smets - 2009 - Journal of Medical Ethics 35 (5):276-282.
Background: Discussing treatment risks has become increasingly important in medical communication. Still, despite regulations, physicians must decide how much and what kind of information to present. Objective: To investigate patients’ preference for information about a small risk of a complication of colonoscopy, and whether medical and personal factors contribute to such preference. To propose a disclosure policy related to our results. Design: Vignettes study. Setting: Department of Gastroenterology, Academic Medical Centre, the Netherlands. Patients: 810 consecutive colonoscopy patients. Intervention: A home-sent (...)

    A representation theorem for languages with generalized quantifiers through back-and-forth methods.Renato H. L. Pedrosa & Antonio M. A. Sette - 1988 - Studia Logica 47 (4):401 - 411.
We obtain in this paper a representation of the formulae of extensions ofL by generalized quantifiers through functors between categories of first-order structures and partial isomorphisms. The main tool in the proofs is the back-and-forth technique. As a corollary we obtain the Caicedo's version of Fraïssés theorem characterizing elementary equivalence for such languages. We also discuss informally some geometrical interpretations of our results.

    The management of DNA double‐strand breaks in mitotic G2, and in mammalian meiosis viewed from a mitotic G2 perspective.Paul S. Burgoyne, Shantha K. Mahadevaiah & James M. A. Turner - 2007 - Bioessays 29 (10):974-986.
DNA double‐strand breaks (DSBs) are extremely hazardous lesions for all DNA‐bearing organisms and the mechanisms of DSB repair are highly conserved. In the eukaryotic mitotic cell cycle, DSBs are often present following DNA replication while, in meiosis, hundreds of DSBs are generated as a prelude to the reshuffling of the maternally and paternally derived genomes. In both cases, the DSBs are repaired by a process called homologous recombinational repair (HRR), which utilises an intact DNA molecule as the repair template. Mitotic (...)

Sir John Herschel and the Development of Spectroscopy in Britain.M. A. Sutton - 1974 - British Journal for the History of Science 7 (1):42-60.
One of the most dramatic advances in the physical sciences during the nineteenth century was the emergence of spectroscopy. It rapidly became an invaluable experimental technique for chemists and astronomers, while for physicists it opened a window upon the world of sub-atomic phenomena. Sir John Herschel played an important part, the value of which has sometimes been underestimated, in the early development of spectroscopy. This paper examines his contribution to the subject during the period 1819–61 in the light of his (...)

Drought is a creeping phenomenon that slowly holds an area over time and can be continued for many years. The impacts of drought occurrences can affect communities and environments worldwide in several ways. Thus, assessment and monitoring of drought occurrences in a region are crucial for reducing its vulnerability to the negative impacts of drought. Therefore, comprehensive drought assessment techniques and methods are required to develop adaptive strategies that a region can undertake to reduce its vulnerability to drought substantially. For (...)

    The pineal family of aromatic amine N‐acetyltransferases.David C. Klein, Pierre Voisin & M. A. Aryan Namboodiri - 1985 - Bioessays 3 (5):217-220.
The mammalian pineal gland contains two types of N‐acetyltransferases which act on aromatic amines. One type preferentially acetylates arylamines such as phenetidine and aniline, whereas the other preferentially acetylates arylalkylamines such as tryptamine and phenylethylamine. The two enzymes can be distinguished by (1) molecular size, (2) regulation, and (3) inactivation characteristics. Arylalkylamine N‐acetyltransferase is involved in the regulation of melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland. A specific function of pineal arylamine N‐acetyltransferase has not been established; it may function as a (...)

Buildings are constructed for accommodating living and industrial needs. Floor cleaning robots have been developed to cater to the demand of these buildings. Area coverage and coverage time are crucial performance factors of a floor cleaning robot. Reconfigurable tiling robots have been introduced over fixed shape robots to improve area coverage in floor cleaning applications compared to robots with fixed morphologies. However, area coverage and coverage time of a tiling robot compromised one another. This study proposes a novel concept that (...)

Richard Peters has been praised for the authenticity of his philosophy, and inquiry into aspects of the development of his philosophy reveals a profound authenticity. Yet authenticity is something he seems not to favour. The apparent paradox is resolved by observing historical changes in the understanding of authenticity as an important value. Possibilities are noted for further explorations as to how to understand and value it as an educational ideal.

    Perihelion precession in the special relativistic two-body problem.M. A. Trump & W. C. Schieve - 1998 - Foundations of Physics 28 (9):1407-1416.
The classical two-body system with Lorentz-invariant Coulomb work function V = -k/ρ is solved in 3+1 dimensions using the manifestly covariant Hamiltonian mechanics of Stückelberg. Particular solutions for the reduced motion are obtained which correspond to bound attractive, unbound attractive, and repulsive scattering motion. A lack of perihelion precession is found in the bound attractive orbit, and the semiclassical hydrogen spectrum subsequently contains no fine structure corrections. It is argued that this prediction is indicative of the correct classical special relativistic (...)

On the description of multiple measurements of an unstable state.M. A. Braun & K. Urbanowski - 1992 - Foundations of Physics 22 (4):617-630.
The nondecay probability of an unstable particle at a definite moment of time is investigated provided this particle existed at all earlier observation moments separated with the time interval Δ. Using the usual postulates for quantum measurements it is proved that this probability is described by the exponential function of Δ>0, and it tends to 1 as Δ → 0. An approximate formula is found for the effective decay width Γ(Δ) appearing in the case of multiple measurements. It is shown (...)

    Mechanisms underlying induction and maintenance of long‐term potentiation in the hippocampus.M. A. Lynch - 1989 - Bioessays 10 (2-3):85-90.
Long‐term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus is accompanied by a number of changes on both sides of the synapse. It is now generally considered that the trigger for initiating LTP is the entry of calcium into the postsynaptic area through the NMDA‐associated channel while the mechanism(s) underlying the maintenance of LTP are less well understood and probably involve contributions from both sides of the synapse.

When Rules Really Make a Difference: The Effect of Cooperation Rules and Self-Sacrificing Leadership on Moral Norms in Social Dilemmas. [REVIEW]Laetitia B. Mulder & Rob M. A. Nelissen - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 95 (1):57 - 72.
If self-interested behavior conflicts with the collective welfare, rules of cooperation are often installed to prevent egoistic behavior. We hypothesized that installing such rules may instigate personal moral norms of cooperation, but that they fail in doing so when installed by a leader who is self-interested rather than self-sacrificing. Three studies confirmed this and also showed that, consequently, only self-sacrificing leaders were able to install rules that increase cooperation without the need for a perfectly operating monitoring system.

    The Philosophy of James Ward. [REVIEW]A. E. M. - 1937 - Journal of Philosophy 34 (4):104-105.
Originally published in 1937, this book presents the philosophy of James Ward, the Professor of Mental Philosophy and Logic at the University of Cambridge. Ward was primarily concerned with the perceived antagonism between science and philosophy or religion, and Murray supplies a psychological background to Ward's thinking that helps to explain his interest in this topic. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Ward or the duality of faith and reason.

Metaepistemology may be defined in the obvious manner as the study of the aim, nature, sources, structure, etc. of theories of knowledge, not of "lower-level" knowledge per se but of theories thereof; the increasing popularity of the field may be seen from the publication of, and attention received by, such a book as Richard Rorty's Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature. Habermas is the leading contemporary exponent of what has come to be known as the Frankfurt School or Critical Theory (...)

The restoration of "forgotten" names to the bosom of our culture is a natural and necessary accompaniment of the political freedom beginning to make its way in our country. Free and continuous creativity is being reunited with the reader, the listener, and the participant, who had been tragically alienated from it. Our half-knowledge, intellectual arbitrariness, and opportunism are becoming clearer, more acute, and more shameful. All this is an inevitable accompaniment of one of the most prestigious and, it would seem, (...)

    Is Xunzi a utilitarian? Revisiting a disagreement.M. A. O. Zhaohui - 2018 - Asian Philosophy 28 (4):358-367.
In Chinese scholarship, Xunzi is often regarded as an eclectic Confucian master who accepted some form of utilitarian thoughts (e.g. Fung Yu-lan, Mou Zongsan and Xu Fuguan). This characteristic was also observed by some western scholars such as Benjamin I. Schwartz. In a recent study, I argued that the basic character of Xunzi’s philosophy is utilitarianism in a broad sense based on an examination on his intellectual criticism and political criticism. Xunzi asserts that humans are innately driven by self-interested desires, (...)
